Raleigh Squared: The City Started with Five Downtown Parks

The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial stands in the middle of Nash Square, a tribune to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.The original plan for Raleigh included five parks covering entire city blocks. Two have disappeared to make way for state offices. Of the other three, one is the site of the Old State Capitol, while Moore and Nash squares remain.

Raleigh Opposes Nash Chicken Plant

Sanderson Farms’ proposed plant, dubbed “Project Baseball,” would be located in the Neuse River basin. City officials recently submitted comments to the state saying, in effect, that the facility could force Raleigh to spend more money on clean water initiatives to mitigate the resulting chicken waste in the Neuse.
