<description>It was disappointing to see only 11% of the electorate cast ballots for such critical public offices as city council and board of education in Wake County this past week. The system worked well for the only focused and enthused group, those advocating neighborhood schools, and their efforts paid off for them. Democrats can do the same thing, if they will. At least, and significantly, voters showed they want progressive leadership in the broader areas of muncipal leadership by re-electing Mayor Charles Meeker, and councilors Nancy McFarlane, Russ Stephenson, Mary Ann Baldwin, James West and Thomas Crowder.

The next elections will be for seats in the North Carolina legislature, along with congressional and a U. S. senate seat, so turnout may be stronger. As a Democratic candidate myself, for the District 15 seat in the state Senate, covering North Raleigh and the Town of Wake Forest, I urge all to be ready to vote because, aside from the other key issues about the environment and the economy, the party that is in the majority next year will determine how the state legislative and congressional electoral districts are drawn. If the Republican reign in the NC General Assembly in 2010 (census year), count on the districts being re-drawn in their favor. This is a reason to get busy and to be dedicated to electing Democrats to these offices.

I will be working hard to win the Dist. 15 state Senate seat from the Republican incumbent. The 2010 elections are critical to the future of Raleigh and Wake County. We must not let up. We must sustain the gains earned in 2008.
