Raleigh Squared: The City Started with Five Downtown Parks

The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial stands in the middle of Nash Square, a tribune to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.The original plan for Raleigh included five parks covering entire city blocks. Two have disappeared to make way for state offices. Of the other three, one is the site of the Old State Capitol, while Moore and Nash squares remain.

A Monument to Love: State Fair Waterfall Tells a Long-Time Love Story of Jim and Helen Graham

The new waterfall at the NC State Fair was dedicated on October 14, 1999 as the Helen Kirk Graham Waterfall. All money thrown into the waterfall is donated to the eastern chapter of the N.C. Alzheimer's Association.As people from across the state head to the State Fair, the Record remembers a romance that started there more than 70 years ago.
